- Hey Jon,
It is very gratifying to have someone to get an answer from when you
need it. I have a 1985 300D that I purchased off an old-timer so I am going
through it to make sure everything is serviced properly. Am about to
pull the rear wheels and axles so I may service the rear wheel bearings. I
cannot find a picture or instructions on doing this (Haynes Manual useless)
and was wondering if there is anything I need to know or watch for? I assume
the bearings are the type you can service (repack)? Any info or a
picture would be appreciated. Also, are factory
manuals available and how do I get them? I would like to run this little
diesel for a million miles! Thanks for taking the time to help.

- Hello Gary. The rear wheel bearings are a sealed unit, unless they are
making a roaring sound, don't mess with them. Trust me, it is not a do it at
home project. It is a difficult and patience trying time even with a hoist
and all the tools. The rear bearing is similar to the front bearings, except
that you have to remove the hub in order to get to the bearings. A huge
slide hammer with a special jig is needed for that. The bearings are usually
ruined in the removal atemp. They are kind of a one time deal. I would have
to look to see if there is documentation from Mercedes on how to do it. I am
sure there is. If you just bought the car and need some books, start with
the engine manual. I would look on www.ebay.com
and use the search word
"mercedes" or "Mercedes manual". I see them all the time
and may not be
available from the dealers any more. All the books are going to CD. Spend
your time with the front wheel bearings, making sure to put the locking
collar on correctly, not to tight and facing the right way. Thanks for the
Email. JON
