I am replacing the fuel level sensor (in the fuel tank) on a 300E 1986 model merc.  The sensor unit is held in the tank by a large flanged nut about 35mm a/f. The nut has a very low profile (about 4-5 mm high) and would present problems of removal with a normal wrench - it is also held at quite a high torque.  Have you experience of changing one of these and is a special tool required? I would be grateful for any help you can offer as I dont want to damage the nut by using an inappropriate tool.

  • Thanks for the email. I had the same problem when I first came across these
types of nuts. I use a 1/2 inch ratchet and use a standard Mac tools socket,
it fits pretty close but good enough to work. The cap seems tight because of
the rubber sealing ring underneath. You will want to make sure the sealing
ring is in the groove before you tighten it down. Please be sure to take the
gas cap off before you start to relieve the pressure. I am sure that a local
sears store will have the socket but it will be pricey. Maybe a local repair
shop can hellp you at least figure out the size you will need. I am not at
work but I believe the size was 1 3/8 inches. I do not have the metric size.
There is a tool or socket available through www.asttool.com  Thanks JON
