- Hello Jon,
I have just visited your web site, and it looks very nice. I have
a
question for you. I own a 1988 Mercedes 300e, which has intermittent
problems of power. I will explain..Sometimes when I am driving and
trying to accelerate the car does not respond immediately, but after a
while(1 minute) the car feels like it has unblocked and works fine. I
have changed the wiring rotor and distributor cap spark plugs and fuel
filter, and I am still having the same problem. Do you have any
suggestions of what may cause this problem
Thank you

- Thanks for the email. The most likely scenario is a problem with the
oxygen sensor. When a Mercedes like your does not oscillate (lambda control which controls
the rich and lean) the car does not know how to react. I use what is called a Fluke meter
to check for oscillation. The oscillation will
stick at a 50% ratio when the O2 sensor is bad. Most foreign car places(at least the ones
that know what there doing) can check this easily using the
diagnostic socket on the left font fender well. The round diagnostic
socket has nine pins. Use pins two and three (2 is neg. and 3 is pos.) Another
likely problem is the EHA. The Electro Hydraulic Accuator controls fuel
pressure and limits rpm. In most cases this unit will leak fuel. It is located on your
fuel distributor under your air cleaner. Depending on the mileage your car should have a
major service(all fluids and filters) every 30,000 miles. Let me know if you do get this
problem repaired. Please visit
www.star-mercedes.com that is my
Mercedes service center.
- Hi Jon,
Thank you very much for the prompt response to my request. Most of the time my
requests are never answered. I am glad that your advice matches the one I got
yesterday from a Mercedes mechanic. He told me that the oxygen sensor should be
replaced every 120,000 kilometers.Your reply convinced me to have the sensor changed, and
I have an appointment with him on Monday. Most mechanics think you are made of money when
you own a Mercedes, sometimes it is true,
but not in my case. Again I thank you very much for your advice, which
gives me a sense of reasurement. I'll keep you posted on the results. If you
have any maintenance tips ,and things I should look out for I would appreciate it.
Thank you
