- I enjoyed your web site. I have a question that will probably sound stupid,
but here it goes. I have a 91 300E and the hood star was recently broken
off. I ordered one from an internet site, but I do not know how to install
it. The broken one is still in (excluding the actual star.) Any
suggestions would be great because I do not want to pay to have it installed
unless absolutely nesseccary.
Many thanks,
Kelli
- It is easy and tricky to install the grill star. To remove the old one
get a pair of channel locks and open your hood. Put your left hand on top
of whats remaining from your grill star and in your right hand take the
channel locks ( set to about the middle position ) grab the bottom of the
grill star ( this may be a little tricky because it is slightly recessed )
and pull down fairly hard. You will be pulling against a spring so hold on
tight. When the spring stretches from pulling on it the entire assembly will
fall apart in your hands, pull the spring at least 1 to 2 inches, you must
hold your hand on top of the grill so when you push out the remaining pieces
they don't slide down your hood and hit the windshield ( I did that ONCE ).
Once you have all the pieces out of the grill you must be
more careful
installing the new star because it is a one time deal and if you do it wrong
chances are you will be doing the spring pull trick to remove it and you
will have to buy another one. Insert the new star into the hood and get your
channel locks. While holding the star down again with your left hand take
the channel locks and grab the base of the star and pull down very lightly
and turn it clockwise. You must pull both sides of the metal piece with even
pressure, if one side slides off while your doing it it's all over. You will
notice that brass colored piece that you are turning will come off a ledge
and clamp up against the underside of the grill. This whole process should
take less than a minute. I am enclosing some pictures. on picture # 10 the
brass colored piece is on the ledge. once installed it will look like
picture # 13. I hope That I have made myself clear but it is hard to
describe it. Give it a try. Let me know what happens, and if you have any
more questions. JON we do not charge for installation of the grill stars at
work but most authorized dealers do.......... www.starmercedes.com
THANKS
JON
- Thank you for responding so quickly. I haven't tried it yet, but as soon
as I do I will let you know. I appreciate your help. (Oh, and thanks for
the bit about hitting the windshield. When I had one replace before, the
guy almost had to buy me a new windshield because of that same problem.)
Have a good day.

Dear John,
I came across
your site and found it very interesting.
I thought you
would like to know about a website for mercedes technical help and discussion
that is a community of nearly 5000 members.
For the person
interested in modding his benz, check out www.benzsport.com it
has lots of information on modifying benzes for performance gains and is a
great community consisting of many mercedesshop.com members.
I found the
information on your site very helpful. However on the 300CE star removal, it
is possible to remove the whole assembly without destroying it. I have done it
myself several times.
You can twist
the lock on the hood star back into its original position if you take the
grille off the car. you can then reinstall the star and lock it down like
before. I did this with needle nose pliers. Also you might want to mention
that if you are removing a broken star, you can pull the little pin holding
the spring, and it will come completely apart very easily.
In any case, I
thought you might find those sites interesting.
I go by the
name AshMan on those sites.
Sincerely,
Alon Asherson
