02/26/2004 Jon: I have a 1987 260E that has a couple of bad valve lifters. The maintenance book I have says that the spacing for these lifters is very difficult to achieve and is best left to the dealer. I’ve never met a lifter that I couldn’t replace yet, but thought I might ask your advice before I tackle the job. I would greatly appreciate the assistance.
Dave The lifters are really compensators. They are located inside the rocker arms. Really no trick to changing them, just tap them out making sure the top sealing washer is in right side up but remember, you must blow the oil out of the cam tower holes before reinstalling the bolts and you must not over tighten the camtower bolts. I believe the setting is 27nm or 16 ft lbs. JON |
